A research project supported by the European Commission under the Fifth Framework Programme and contributing to the implementation of the Key Action "Sustainable Management and Quality of Water" within the Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development Thematic Programme. Contract no.EVK1-CT-2000-00085: June 2001-May 2004

MERIT will develop an integrated, water resource management methodology suitable for use at the river basin scale throughout Europe. There are three main objectives:

  • To develop techniques that effectively engage stakeholder groups in the decision making process.
  • To take a model-based decision support technique, already used successfully in other fields (e.g. medicine) and adapt it to the problem of integrated water resource management. The technique is based on the concept of Bayesian networks.
  • To construct demonstration Belief networks within four catchments in the UK, Denmark, Spain and Italy, each having different water resource problems.
